ETHNOMEDICAL PRACTICES AMONG YANADIS OF ANDHRA PRADESH: A SOCIO-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE By Dr.Penchalaiah Koduru

Abstract

Since time immemorial, human societies have devised ways and means to deal with ill-health. Particularly Tribal communities have developed their own medical systems for coping up of their health and disease and also their own systems of diagnosis and curative methods basing on their ecological settings, natural resources and cultural practices. Yanadis are one of the major Scheduled Tribes in Andhra Pradesh. Yanadis are ptoto-australoid, dark skinned, platyrrhine, below medium statured, long headed with a short chin, scanty moustache without whiskers and they are mainly non vegetarians but abstain from eating beef .Their language is Telugu .The treatment of diseases among the traditional communities like Yanadi tribe includes:  Application / administering of medicines either plant, animal or mineral origin, invocation and appeasement of the supernatural and magical spells and means.
