Introduction
The world has experienced various phases in the evolution of student development. In the past, education systems primarily focused on academic achievements. However, there is an increasing recognition of the importance of student wellbeing and holistic development. The emphasis now is on nurturing not just the intellect but the whole individual, encompassing emotional, social, and psychological growth. Emotional intelligence, which involves understanding and managing one’s emotions as well as those of others, plays a critical role in this approach. Alongside this, fostering resilience i.e. the ability to bounce back from challenges and adapt to change is equally crucial.
The current model of education often overlooks critical aspects of student growth, particularly emotional intelligence and resilience. The intense focus on academic performance can lead to stress and mental health issues, leaving little room for developing resilience and emotional intelligence. In response to these challenges, innovations such as Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) are being integrated into curricula. These programmes help students develop emotional intelligence by teaching them to manage emotions, build healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions. These programmes also foster resilience, helping students to cope with challenges and adapt to change.
