STUDY SHOWCASING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EGO STRENGTH AND ADJUSTMENT AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS By Kanika Suri, Rita, and Ishita P. Kothiyal

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between ego strength and adjustment among medical students. The medical students go under prolonged stress so for checking the competency of future doctors their adjustment level can be a very good predictor in defining their roles later as medical doctors. Objectives:  The cardinal objective of this research is to study the relationship between adjustment and ego strength and see which medical students are having better ego strength as well as adjustment. Materials and Methods: 80 students (40 males + 40 females) who were equally taken from First and final year class. The students were randomly selected as first their demographic data was taken and then a random selection was made with an equal number of males and females. Then the tools namely, Ego- Strength scale established by Dr. Q. Hassan and Bell’s Adjustment Inventory developed by Dr. R.K. Ojha were used to collect data. According to the results, male final year students had lower scores on adjustment in their mean scores and there was a significant interaction aimed at gender among the students for adjustment at 0.01 level. The ego strength was also highest among male final year students at the mean of their t-scores. There was a significant difference on interaction and year of study for ego strength for the students. A negative un-significant relationship was seen for adjustment and ego strength. Conclusions: research shows the lower averages for adjustment and ego strength showing the need for psychological intervention.
